I remember getting Nadia all those years ago. I remember trying to walk her on a harness and her getting stuck in a tree. And her cuddling on my lap on the front steps at Butler Apartments. She was always such a lovely little princess!

Give my love to Sasha and your new furry baby.

Is there any plans for an actual set of cards to be produced specifically for the purpose of playing Cripple Mr Onion using the arcana from the discworld series? And if so where can I get them?

Many thanks, and remember unless you're wearing tinplate knickers, the Hedgehog really can never be buggered at all!!!

I’ve reinstated the form to allow people to submit new entries to the guestbook and added in another layer of protection to prevent spam-robots from filling this page up with rubbish.

Best wishes for the Winter Solstice to you all!

I’ve temporarily disabled the form to submit new entries to the guestbook because it keeps filling up with spam. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Entry 57 submitted by Frank Maddix on Sat Sep 10 2005.

I worked in Hartford for a year at the University of Hartford. I once had to visit the Connecticut Medical Center.

Last weekend my daughter and her friend cleared the table at CMO at a Pratchett festival.

So, obviously, your genius is catching, but I am merely a carrier. ATB.

Entry 56 submitted by Melissa Chan on Thu Dec 16 2004.

Hey Andrew! How’re you doing? I just wanted to say hello, and that I hope Nadia and Sasha are doing well. Of course, I hope you’re well, too. And I suppose I should write something positive about your pages here, too. Well, you’ve got some very nice webpages here. I very much appreciate them. Ciao!

Wow! What a fascinating game. It does seem quite complicated (not so much the nature of the rules, perhaps, but remembering all the hands, modifiers etc.) but it sounds like fun. As a designer, I also find the idea of creating a custom deck of cards appealing.

I have not read any of Terry Pratchett’s work, but the discovery of your site just might inspire me to delve into it. I have added the Cripple Mr Onion site to my links page, in the hope that others may also discover this unique game.

Entry 54 submitted by Priya on Fri Sep 17 2004.

How are Nadia and Sasha??

Entry 53 submitted by Ali on Wed Aug 4 2004.

You got all that from Witches Abroad???? Utter genuis, really. Being a poker man myself of course, the whole ‘betting against the dealer’ shennanigans make it a bit frustrating, but the game can be easily modified to resemble a no limit texas hold em betting style.

Again though, utter genius :)

Entry 52 submitted by Andrew Millard Smith on Tue Aug 3 2004.

Interesting!

Entry 51 submitted by Andrew Charles Millard on Wed May 26 2004.

Quite the site dude, and a very impressive repertoire of educational achievement. And no, my name is not a joke, my name really is Andrew C (Charles) Millard, and I live/attend University in Canada. Any roots back in England?

Great work, awesome site! Later

Entry 50 submitted by Zachary on Fri Mar 5 2004.

I used a pair of normal decks. That way all cards of one suit match up, instead of getting more cards to match up a pair of suits. It’s much easier.

Entry 49 submitted by ling on Mon Jan 19 2004.

I like this website, and your experience is wonderful! The research about second harmonic generation is great! Can you give more introduction for that? Maybe many people have interest in it.

Entry 48 submitted by Daniel M. on Wed Oct 22 2003.

Instead of using italian cards which are few and far between, you can use one pack of ordinary cards and one pack of novelty cards, i.e. with pictures of landmarks etc. on the front.

It makes the game much easier.

Entry 47 submitted by Jessica Ayscue on Sun Jul 20 2003.

Cripple Mr Onion sounds like a very interesting — and complex — game. I enjoyed looking over the rules. I am also interested in playing Thud, which I read the rules of. My friend has the game board. Anyway, thank you so much.

Jessica.

What Turkish hotel and carpet baron did you piss off?

Good question! I turn my back for a while and my guestbook fills up with listings for hotels and rug stores in Istanbul! I’m deleting them now... ACM

Thanks for the hard work, can’t wait to try the game out tonight!

Entry 45 submitted by Harry on Sat Apr 12 2003.

Hello, nice site.

Entry 44 submitted by Cindy on Wed Apr 2 2003.

My husband, eldest daughter (age 12) and I are big Discworld fans. The other day while playing Barbie Uno with the youngest (age 5), I announced “I’ve got a Cripple Mr Onion“ which led me to searching the web and finding this site. Many thanks from at least three of us (the youngin still like Barbie Uno).

BICYCLE E-Z-SEE LoVision Playing Cards, sold by the US Playing Card Company, have the same "Rider Back" design as the BICYCLE Rider Back Playing Cards. In addition, these cards have Diamonds in Green, and Clubs in Blue. The Face, Ace and Numbered cards are also distinguishable from the "standard" deck by having a LoVision/Large Font face.

I have modified the a LoVision Deck by writing on the face of the cards: Writing the Latin Suit Names over the Pips and the Modifier Names (The Lady, Fate, Great A’Tuin, Sender of Eight, Death, Archchancellor, and Fool) over the appropriate Face Cards. I’ll let you know how it works out...

Entry 42 submitted by Kate Knott on Fri Sep 6 2002.

I have been trying to get on to these pages for ages — and kept being told there was some sort of error! Now that I’ve got the rules I need someone to play.

If I can only get my mates to play this with me I’ll be quids-in!

GOOD WORK FELLA!

It is so cool that someone would figure out Cripple Mr Onion! I’m going to have to find someone now who is willing to learn it with me!

Keep up your physics and stuff, since you seem to like it!

Entry 35 submitted by Judy on Tue Jul 3 2001.

Hi Andrew,

It’s all your fault. I’m hooked on Perltello as I can’t decipher Cripple Mr Onion...

Talk to you soon!

Entry 34 submitted by tomte on Thu Jun 7 2001.

I was wondering a little about the rules of Cripple Mr Onion. For simplicity, let’s say I’m playing the game with only the first (#0) modifier. As I see it, the best hand possible is a Triple Onion along with at least 3 more aces. This way no one can have more than a Double Onion, and you can’t be crippled. It doesn’t have to be anything strange with that, but it kind of leads onto my real question.

Consider a hand of a Great Onion. Since you have 5 of the 8 aces, the best hand any one else can have is a Triple Onion. Therefore it would be better to present your hand as a Lesser Onion (since it’s harder to cripple), and then let the other two cards be a two-card onion. Is this allowed?

http://www.crimron.net/

I now have an iMac running OS X, so this site is served by Apache with the use of Perl CGIs :)

Please let me know if you find any bugs!

Entry 32 submitted by Liz Thompson on Sun Dec 3 2000.

Can’t follow the fizzicks, but love the hangman game. Only thing is, why doesn’t DEATH appear when you lose?

Entry 31 submitted by Caroline Millard on Wed Nov 29 2000.

The rules of Cripple Mr Onion are just as fascinating (and totally incomprehensible) as when you first came up with the game and confounded the family with its early stages on holiday many years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take care, Andrew, from your favourite sister.

Great pages. Was a little surprised to find there was only one other entry about the WPM. Your physics stuff looks very interesting. Read you later! :)

Entry 27 submitted by Roger Mailhot on Wed Sep 29 1999.

Well, I am impressed. Though I don’t have time to play games, your other sites are something to behold. I am answering your questions via email, may not be of interest to all.

Greetings from Quebec.

Entry 26 submitted by David Roberts III on Thu Sep 23 1999.

You have obviously worked very hard to make this explanation of the game as straightforward as possible.

I found a download of the game at www.freeyellow.com/members2/mronion

Well done on your work.

Hi there!

I’m probably the greatest German Pratchett fan and when I found your cool Cripple Mr Onion site I laughed so loud, the others guys in this university computer room threw me out.

However, I came back (you can’t even imagine how useful wigs and false beards are... ;) ) and I gotta say: At last I have complex rules for the most popular Discworld game... Thank you! ;)

So long,

Elric of Melniboné!!!

Entry 24 submitted by Grimm on Sun Aug 8 1999.

Exellent site! The explanations are very thorough and understandable. Thanks a lot.

Entry 23 submitted by Luke on Wed Jul 28 1999.

I think the rules of this game are too complex; are there any simpler versions?

Entry 20 submitted by Andrew C. Millard on Tue Jul 6 1999.

That’s my real name, no joke!!!

“C” is for Charles (in my name)... I just thought it would be neat to drop another Andrew Millard with the exact same name a line. Write back if you want. By the way, are you of English descent? Nice page too...

Bye for now.

Wow! Great job, [Cripple Mr Onion] looks extremely complicated. A lot of time and effort obviously went into this!

Thank you.

Damn good site, I really liked the CMO pages...

To keep it short — Discworld forever!

Entry 13 submitted by Ricardo Campos on Fri Feb 26 1999.

I just found this page which did surprise me, as I have all of Terry Pratchett’s books and I didn’t know I too could already play Cripple Mr Onion!! Thank you very much for this page and these rules! I can hardly wait to try the game!

By the way, I just finished reading The Last Continent and Carpe Jugulum. The man is a total genius!! I hope he writes many more Discworld novels!
